I tried out iMeem. It's an online networking and communications service, sort of like MySpace except it uses a software client for it's front end. It appears to be aimed at n00bs and teens. It's can interface with multiple IM protocols like AIM, Yahoo!, Google, etc. It also has photo and file sharing and blogging capabilities and this seems to be iMeem's primary focus. However, I used it for about 10 minutes before it annoyed me so much I couldn't use it any longer.
The most annoying thing about it is the chat window. It's just a window (no other controls at all) and your text is encapsulated in word balloons that point toward whatever your icon is. You, the user are on the right and the person you're chatting with is on the left. It's pointless and I find it difficult to read, especially the text on my side because it's all aligned right for no good reason.
It has a sort of built in browser. But you can't actually use it to surf the net. Instead, links are opened in your default browser. Some people may like this but it seems like a waste of desktop space and resources. If it has a perfectly usable browser built in, then why do I need an extra app open on my desktop?
The photo and file sharing is a great idea and so is the blogging. It's nice to have all these things available from a single app. It appears they put a lot of thought into these functions. It lacks voice and video chat though. What's up with that? It's like they only went half way then gave up.
It has some good ideas but it's lacking as an all-in-one communication solution. The chat window is bare bones and childish in it's presentation. I can't recommend iMeem to anyone.
