The Edison, Los Angeles
[info]veniceparrish wrote in [info]steamfashion
Okay, so, I'm a relative newbie to Steampunk and have recently been collecting information on the people, who they are, where they are, gatherings and places to meet and greet here in LA.

One place I've been referred to, and keep hearing about is The Edison. Review of their website has me screeching, "OMG!!" It's FABULOUS! Prices of drinks are fabulous too.... but, hey, that's Hollywood for ya! Anyway.....

While the decor SCREAMS 19th century victorian, the dress code description addresses something more of a silent/20s and even later, perhaps, sort of style of dress, so my question is this:

Do steampunkers just wander in any old time they want or are there days/times that are more steampunk oriented or what?

Basically, I'm just wondering if there's anyone who's been there and, if so, give us an idea of what the place is like and how it works.

Not fashion but I also found this clock that could be quite steamy'ish with a metallic paint coat. Classic clock projector:

At Orycon last weekend, three of the winning entries were steampunk. I apologize for not having the names of the others, but the child’s winner, Captain Zachary was very cute

I recently started in roller derby and want my alter ego to be steampunk. I just wanted to get some extra input from people for ideas. I will probably be wearing a skirt, and don't want any metal or big buckle, buttons, or things that I can easily get hurt with when I fall. Any ideas?

Gatehouse Gazette photo competition
[info]hildekitten wrote in [info]steamfashion
For the 10th edition the Gatehouse Gazette is still looking for steampunk or dieselpunk photos for it's usual photo competition.
The best image will be published in the magazine, which will be released at the end of December/beginning of January (depending on how heavily the holidays take their toll on our poor chief editor).

So go ahead and send in your finest images to Mr Nick Ottens at n dot ottens at gmail dot com and partake in the competition. You might see your image published if you're lucky! :)

The deadline is December 22 so you still have time!

Good luck everyone!

As a sidenote: please only send in a photo you are allowed to send in. So a photo you took, or of which you have permission of the photographer to enter. Entering a photo is on your own reponsability :)

Steam Fashion Peaked?
[info]robert_from_ap wrote in [info]steamfashion

In a recent interview with a contemporary ladies fashion magazine I was asked if Steampunk was "peaking". I though you might like to hear my response:

Steampunk as an aesthetic has been around for years – 110 years, to be exact. It been a part of popular culture uninterrupted this long, as can be scene in movies from A Trip To The Moon (1914), Metropolis (1927), Unknown World (1951), Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968), The Shadow (1994), The Prestige (2006), and hundreds more. If its “peeking”, its taken 100 years to get here.

The only thing new is that there is now a publically known word for what’s already a known style. Its never before been a subculture, and our Zeitgeist has not connected all these things together. Its now an internationally recognized subculture, but the stories, fashion, movies, furniture, art, architecture and music has been around for over a hundred years.

on a only SLIGHT unrelated side note, Abney Parks new CD goes on sale tonight a midnight.

Steamy Captain's Log?
[info]lunascura wrote in [info]steamfashion
I stumbled across a site called Rogue Journals today, and they have a very steamy looking leather bound, stamped and riveted journal that seems perfect for a captain's log or adventurer's journal...

It's called the Old Westerner.

Can't vouch for the service or anything, but there are certainly some very cool looking goodies floating around the site.

I looked through the tags to make sure no one else has mentioned this and didn't find anything, so if I'm repeating someone else's past post, I apologize.

Anyway, I had some antiqued brass charms I wanted to put together as a brooch, but my brass safety pins were blindingly yellow. Solution? Dunk them in a broth of 1/2 household bleach mixed with 1/2 white vinegar. After about half an hour, the pins had a nice patina and better matched the charms. I rinsed the pins in warm soapy water and blotted them dry. This can be done with any small brass items.

NOTE: this bleach/vinegar mixture is toxic and pungent! I suggest you do this outside and wear a mask/hold your breath before dumping the solution and rinsing your brass items! I should add, too, that I only needed to use a few tablespoons of this mixture to antique quite a few pins. Don't be gassing your neighborhood, now!

Here's the result:

Bellysteam this hat!
[info]betnoir wrote in [info]steamfashion
I could not resist this hat. I HAD to own this hat.

and now, having purchased this hat, I realized...oh the horror!...all of my SteamStuff is bellydance-enabled. So how to make this fabulous hat fit the theme?

Basic costume here.

My artist friend suggested hanging coin or beading trim similar to what you would see for a coin belt in bellydance around the top of the ribbon, but I was wondering if anybody had any other thoughts.

[EDIT: The ribbon does actually match my outfit, which is purple/burgundy, so no fears on that account]

Look what I can do!

Ok So I need to boast because frankly I'm proud. I made hair clips for my friends and I because we are attending the Dickensian ball this weekend in Minneapolis, MN. They're super steamy I think and I'm rather proud of how they turned out. The parts were found on ebay, but I'm thinking about making more of these little buggers and perhaps opening up a spot on etsy to sell them so I'd need to find a local clock parts dealer. Any suggestions from those who are local,? I'm looking in the Minneapolis/St.paul and surrounding area in Minnesota.

I'm sorry the pictures are blurry/flash-tastic I was using my little digital camera in a fairly dark room.

More Pics Below the cut! )

Now here's the question: Do you think that I could sell these? What could I do to improve them?

Steampunkers of Los Angeles, Unite!
[info]veniceparrish wrote in [info]steamfashion
Hello to all Steampunkers in Los Angeles! I KNOW you're out there, but for as big a megalopolis as LA is and as many things as LA offers and even though San Francisco and San Diego have Steampunk groups and conventions, somehow, the Steampunkers of LA have failed to unite and create an annual convention. Well! Things MUST change!

So, my first attempt here, is to simply unite everyone. I have no convention set up, I have no gathering set up, because I don't know where all of you are! But, if we can all get connected, then we can work on getting a group, a gathering and, hopefully, a convention going.

Post a reply to this post with your contact info. Or, contact me at lynda441@yahoo.com. Either way. I want to get a list of people going. My friends and I's first thought is, once we get a good number of people, to simply set up a pot luck gathering in a park, meet, greet and see who's who and where we can take it from there.

Do stop on by and take a peek and hopefully liberate some of these shinies into the wild, they tire of the captivity of my sewing room!
